Part of OSV's new Companion in Faith series, T.J. Burdick's The Lord's Prayer is a solid work of spirituality, helping readers pray the Our Father in a deeper way. As a young husband and father, as well as a high school educator and lay Dominican, Burdick has wonderful insights into the way spirituality informs every aspect of our lives.
The Our Father issues from the heart of Christ; its depths have yet to be plumbed. Burdick sees the seven petitions of the Our Father as not simply the perfect prayer, but a means for prioritizing our lives:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Priority #1 - Honoring God and Neighbor
Thy kingdom come.
Priority #2 - Advancing God's Kingdom
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Priority #3 - Submitting to God's Will
Give us this day our daily bread...
Priority #4 - Balancing Your Life
...and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us...
Priority #5 - Forgiveness
...and lead us not into temptation...
Priority #6 - Discipline
...but deliver us from evil.
Priority #7 - Fighting Sin and Evil
Burdick has crafted wonderful meditations on each of these points, deftly woven of everyday experience, Scripture, the Catechism, and the Summa Theologica. It is theologically meaty but eminently readable. One of the things I really appreciated about the book was its size: 4" x 6" and 54 pages. It was easy for me to slip into my coat pocket and read during breaks in my work day. A book that causes me to be more attentive during prayer is an exquisite gift; The Lord's Prayer is certainly one of those books.
The reflections of Shane Kapler - not a member of religious order or movement, but a garden variety dad - excited by what it means to be "just a Catholic."
(It's like saying you're "just a billionaire.")

Looking to Further Your Catholic Education?
At the heart of all conversions we encounter people. People who, by their example and leadership, guide those
who are seeking into fullness of truth. Augustine had Ambrose.
Aquinas had Albert the Great. And we, who do we have?
Maybe you have enough disposable income to take coursework
through an orthodox college or university. The majority of us do not. We have
our minds, our books and an ocean of information on the internet that we aren’t
sure if it is fact, opinion, truth or heresy.
We need someone to help
us discover truth. And we need a means to be able to connect with that someone,
one that is both inexpensive and time manageable.
The Dominican Institute
is that someone.
My friend, T.J. Burdick, has created a learning platform for
those who seek the timeless truths of the Catholic faith but do not have the
economic or scheduling stability to do so. Courses cost less than 10% what you
would pay at other Catholic Colleges and Universities and more courses are
begin added all of the time. To top it off, each professor has earned their
Masters Degree or their Doctorate in their subject discipline and all are 100%
loyal to the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
This project is exactly what the new evangelization is all about.
It creates a space for the Ambroses to meet with the Augustines, the Alberts
with the Aquinas’. It places Christ at the center of learning and illuminates
the minds of truth seekers in the light of objective truth. What’s more, since
St. Dominic is the founder of the Order of Preachers, the site provides evangelistic
content worth sharing- videos, memes, posts, you name it, they’re preaching,
and they’re winning souls.
Had this site existed when I was going through my conversion, I
would have become Catholic a LOT quicker. Even now that I’ve crossed the Tiber,
the first place I’ll look to learn more will be through the Dominican
Institute. Do yourself a favor and go and explore what they have to offer. I
promise you won’t be sorry.
In fact, they are running a massive giveaway at the moment and
you could land yourself a free spot in one of their courses on top of a
multitude of other free things.

The BIG Unveiling - Check Out YOUCATholic.com
INTRODUCING
As many of you know, I experienced the bulk of my conversion as a middle school and high school student, so when I caught wind that author and blogger TJ Burdick was building a new website to act as a faith clearinghouse for youth, I offered to help in whatever way I could. TJ generously allowed me to join his team of catechists and bloggers, and I am incredibly pumped up about sharing this site with you. Check out the description:Is there a young person in your life who wants to understand their Faith better? Have you been looking for a resource that you and your kids can explore together? Or maybe you are a religion teacher looking for a way to spice up your lessons? Visit YOUCATholic.comYOUCATholic.com is a community of like-minded, traditional Catholics that have been called to teach and learn the Gospel together using New Media. It consists of an open forum, a leveled series’ of nine-week courses that certified catechists have designed to feed you the meat of your Catholic faith and various other resources that can enhance your spiritual life. It is a formation program that allows you to get to know your faith independently using the YOUCAT, YouTube/Vimeo and blogging/vlogging to help guide you toward the profound truths that are found in the Catholic Church.
I bet you are saying to yourself "YOUCAT, YOUCAT ... where have I heard that before?" That's the title of the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church. Written in a lively, more-youth-engaging style, YOUCAT uses creative, youth-oriented photos, graphics, and text to presents the Faith. Plus,YOUCAT is keyed to the Catechism, so it is easy for youth to go even deeper in their study of the faith. Released last year, it could not have received a more stellar endorsement than the one given by Pope Benedict in its Foreword:
"I beg you: Study this Catechism with passion and perseverance. Make a sacrifice of your time for it! Study it in the quiet of your room; read it with a friend; form study groups and networks; share with each other on the Internet."(Maybe you have heard concern voiced regarding the YOUCAT; let me refer you to this post to try and put your mind at ease.) The Church clearly has a lot of faith in this resource - she passed them out at World Youth Day in Madrid and plans to pass out over one million more at this year's event in Rio!
At YOUCATholic.com you can find exactly the kind of online community for growing in the Faith envisioned by Pope Benedict. Here's the list of topics in Course 101:
- Why did God create you?
- Does God Exist?
- Was Jesus really God?
- Why are Mary and the Saints so important?
- Are non-Catholics saved?
- Why do Christians get baptized?
- Why Confirmation?
- Why is the Eucharist so important?
- Final reflections
